The origins of the German national anthem – as well as of he official
banner – date back well before the revolution of 1848. The “Lied der
Deutschen” was composed by August Heinrich Hoffman von Fallersleben on
the island of Helgoland in 1841.
During the
times of the crusades, Emperor Frederick I, also known as Barbarossa, went to
battle to the holy land. In the year 1190, during the third crusade, the
emperor suffered a tragic death: He drowned in a river in Anatolia.
